Susan Ferentinos, PhD, a public history consultant, is seeking a part-time research assistant to help with various public history and historic preservation projects related to LGBTQIA2S+ and other traditionally under-represented histories of the United States.
Duties include locating and scanning sources, research into scholarly and archival sources, assisting with field surveys of historic properties, assisting with public outreach, and other duties as assigned.
Work hours are flexible, requiring 5-8 hours a week on average. Work is expected to last at least until June 2025. Applicants must be physically located in western Washington state and be able to occasionally travel to sites within Seattle, Bellingham, Olympia, and Tacoma (no overnight trips required).
Qualifications that would be useful in this position include:
- Knowledge of LGBTQIA2S+ history in the United States
- Knowledge of BIPOC histories
- Knowledge of architectural history
- Knowledge of historical research methods
- Experience conducting archival research
- Experience researching the history of specific buildings
- Experience with historic building inventories, WISAARD (the Washington state historic properties database), and/or National Register of Historic Places documentation
- Graduate work in US history, historic preservation, or public history
- High-level competence in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Zotero, and social media, or a willingness to learn
